WPU Battles Against Top Grapplers at Luther Open

Decorah–The Statesmen wrestling team had a tough day as it faced off against some of the best wrestlers in the region at the Luther Open Saturday.

The tournament was split into two divisions–Elite and Silver–and William Penn captured a few victories in each.

Heavyweight Matthew Cuthbert (So., Yucaipa, Calif., Sociology) guided the navy and gold’s best as he claimed two victories. 149-pounder Kionte Crocker (Jr., Brandon, Fla., Industrial Technology) and 165-pounder Joshua Wooten (Sr., Belleville, Mich., Exercise Science) also won one match each by fall.

Sheldon Ealy (Fr., North English, Iowa, Sociology) headlined the efforts in the Silver division, taking two victories (one fall) at 141 pounds.

The trio of 133-pounder Darquell Pierre and 157-pounders Wyatt Schlotter (Fr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Education) and Dennis Simmons (Fr., Tucson, Ariz., Sociology) both pinned one foe apiece. Blake Ealy (Fr., North English, Iowa, Sociology) defeated one of his opponents by major decision, while Sadrick Daniel also had his hand raised once at 174 pounds.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Minneapolis, Minn. next Saturday to compete in the Augsburg Invitational. Action is set to begin at 9 a.m.
