Lamoni–In its last road trip of the 2016 campaign, the Statesmen volleyball team was upended 3-0 by Graceland in Heart of America Athletic Conference action Tuesday.

William Penn (6-26, 0-12 Heart), which lost by scores of 29-31, 17-25, 19-25, was outhit .171-.060.

The first set was epic with the visitors owning a sizeable edge at 20-16, but failing to put the Yellowjackets (15-14, 4-7 Heart) away. WPU held a trio of set points, but in the end the hosts ran off three straight points to take the 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately, that comeback basically took the air out of the navy and gold sails as the Statesmen were not able to claim the second or third set.

Lilly Martinez (Jr., Oakland, Calif., Psychology) highlighted the offense with six kills, while Brittany Weikel (Jr., Remsen, Iowa) and Rafaela Macias (Jr., Hanford, Calif., Physical Education) each managed five hitting points.

Kathleen Steffen (So., Vinton, Iowa, Biology) assisted on 16 winners, while defensively, Ashley Miller (So., Kalona, Iowa, Exercise Science) came up with 25 digs and Kiera MacPherson (So., West Chicago, Ill., General Mathematics) tallied two solo blocks.

Next Up: William Penn returns home to conclude its season with a pair of matches in Penn Gymnasium. The first will be Friday as it hosts Faith Baptist Bible in non-conference action at 7 p.m. The match will serve as Senior Night.
