Oskaloosa, Iowa – They may have been in the 5th grade, but their creative abilities were fully visible at the Oskaloosa Elementary this week.

The event was sponsored by the Oskaloosa Elementary Parent – Teacher Organization, and prizes were awarded for; funniest pumpkin, best use of fall theme, most original pumpkin, funniest poem, poem with best use of fall theme and most original poem.

The photography category had students submitting a 5×7 unframed and unmounted photo they had taken, and maybe edited themselves. Those photos could be color or black and white.

The students were able to enter any and/or all of the 3 categories, pumpkins, poetry and photography.

“Many great and different ideas they’ve come up with”, said Mindy Archer, who is a teacher and organizer of the event.

Each 5th grade student wrote a poem in class for the contest.

The pumpkins and photography were voluntary entries, and Archer said that those students who entered those portions of the contest were “very excited to enter”.

Many of the participants were very tight lipped about their creations going on at home.

Teachers this year were given the opportunity to participate as well within their own category.

Archer said the contest has been going on for many years, and is “truly one of the great many things that our PTO does for us for our building”.

Archer also recognized the local businesses that help to sponsor prizes.
