Springfield, Mo.–In one of the best offensive outputs in program history, the Statesmen men’s soccer team defeated Evangel 8-0 in Heart of America Athletic Conference action Saturday.
Not only did William Penn (6-8-2, 3-6-1 Heart) end its three-game losing streak, but the squad also locked up a spot in the league tournament.  The navy and gold will now look to improve their position in the standings, hopefully earning a home game for the tourney.

The visitors posted a 28-6 advantage in shots, but did not score until the 16th minute.  At that moment, though, the floodgates opened as the Statesmen scored three times in just over two and a half minutes.

Gmoh Kanneh (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn., Education) recorded the first goal at the 15:59 mark with the assist going to Joni Cruz (Sr., Salinas, Calif., Psychology).

Nenad Markovic (So., Belgrade, Serbia) then scored unassisted 55 seconds later, while Tom Denat (Fr., Tolouse, France, Physical Education) put in a pass from Lewis Hubbard (So., Colchester, England, Sociology) in the 19th minute.

Cedric Petter (Fr., Aachen, Germany, Business Management) pushed the advantage to 4-0 with his own unassisted goal.  The first half concluded with one more goal as Emmanuel Morris (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn., Business Management) made it 5-0; the double assist went to Steve Lee (So., Camberley, England, Exercise Science) and Joey Messina (Fr., New London, Wisconsin, Information Technology).

Cruz then went to work with back-to-back goals in the 54th and 61st minutes, while Denat managed the assist on the latter score.

With time waning, Edson Bangali (Fr., Huddersfield, England, General Accounting) tallied the final goal on an unassisted shot.

Caleb Pipes-Goulsbra (Jr., Lincoln, England, Exercise Science), with two saves, and Haydon Gibson (Fr., Branson, Mo.), with one, combined for the shutout.

The eight goals tie for the third most in school history and are the most since scoring a school-record 15 on October 10, 2006.

“This was a strong performance for us in a vital road game,” Head Coach Jaymee Highcock said.  “The guys worked very hard and it was good to see us get some goals on the board.  We will continue to push and finish the season as strong as possible.”
