Della Ann Phelps, 81 of Denver, Iowa and formally of Barnes City passed away peacefully Sunday morning, October 16, 2016 at the North Crest Special Care Center in Waterloo. Della Ann Provin the daughter of Carl and Ruby (Back) Provin was born on December 19, 1934 in Iowa City, Iowa.

Della attended Barnes City Public schools and graduated from eighth grade on May 14, 1948.

Della worked hard her entire life and regardless of her job always took pride in her work. In her early years, she worked as a grocery store cashier, requiring her to commit the cost of weekly specials and other store merchandise to memory. Her accuracy and speed earned her the respect of both her employers and customers. Later in her career, she became a retirement home cook. She was in charge of menu planning and purchasing and would often haggle with the local butcher and other merchants to get the best prices possible, so she could stay within her budget and create delicious homemade meals for “her” residences. The retirement center became well known for having the best food for miles around. Her residences were truly dishearten the day she hung up her apron and retired.

Della was an avid reader. She cataloged her books and often read them more than once. Some of her favorite authors were Danielle Steel, Mary Higgins Clark, Fern Michaels, Nora Roberts, and Tom Clancy. She was an expert at sewing clothing and crocheting blankets, tablecloths, and dollies. Even in her later years, she continued to crochet daily, making gifts for her family and friends. Throughout her life, she derived great joy from feeding her loved ones their favorite foods-her pie crusts, homemade beef and noodles, chicken and noodles and fried chicken will be long remembered by many.

Della’s memory will be cherished by her daughter, Aricia (& Ben) Beckman of Waterloo, Iowa; “adopted” daughter, Linda (& Jerry) Binegar of Newton; a son-in-law, Roger Schneider of Federal Way, Washington; her grandchildren: Michael Moen and Lori Moen both of Federal Way, Washington, Derek DeVries of San Francisco, and Melanie DeVries of Iowa City, Iowa; “adopted” granddaughter, Missy (& Binegar) Albright of Hampstead, Maryland; her four great grandchildren: Cody Moen, Breanna Matthews, Christopher Williams and Josh Williams all from the state of Washington; a brother, Cleo (& Jerilyn) Provin of Waterloo, Iowa; and two sisters: Virginia McHenry of Tucson Arizona and Elaine Musgrove of Oskaloosa, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Jacque Schneider; a great-granddaughter, Katie Moen; a special niece, Karla Loonan; two brothers, Lincoln and George Provin; and two sisters, Doris Darland and Rose Lust.

Funeral services will begin at 1:00 pm Friday, October 21, 2016 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be held in the Barnes City Cemetery in Barnes City.
