Silvis, Ill.–Zachary Chegwidden (Fr., Essex, England, Business Management) capped an incredible first collegiate fall by leading the William Penn men’s golf team at the NAIA Preview hosted by St. Ambrose Monday and Tuesday.

The Statesmen placed sixth out of 20 teams with a two-day tally of 622 (316-306) at the par-72 TPC Deere Run GC, the site of next May’s NAIA National Championships.

In an event that included four ranked programs and three others receiving votes, #9 Grand View won the title at 602 (306-296). #18 Mount Mercy, #21 Cardinal Stritch (Wis.), #4 William Woods (Mo.), and #26 Marian (Ind.) were just ahead of the Statesmen, while WPU finished higher in the standings than Northwestern (#33) and host St. Ambrose (#39).

Chegwidden tied for medalist honors in the 100-player event, carding a 74 on Monday and a two-under 70 on Tuesday for a final score of even-par 144. He battled Mitch Pfingsten of Grand View in a playoff, but unfortunately was defeated on the second hole.

“Zach had a great tournament and even though he did not win the playoff, that does not discount how great he played and has played in his first collegiate fall season,” Head Coach Steve Tucker said. “Because of him, we were the last team to leave the course, which is always your goal–to be there at the end to hoist the hardware, individual or team.”

Frederik Lundsgaard (Jr., Jebjerg, Denmark, History/Government) was solid as well, tying for 15th at 153 (78-75).

Clay Tucker (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Elementary Education) tied for 35th at 159 (82-77), while Brandon Dizon (Sr., San Leandro, Calif., Sociology) tied for 77th at 170 (82-88). Sebastian Rulis (Jr., Denmark, Business Management) rounded out the team scoring at 174 (90-84) to tie for 84th.

“This was a great way to finish our fall season,” Tucker said. “We were near the bottom of the standings at this tournament last year, so this shows how much progress this program has made in the past 12 months. “We are still trying to shore up the back end and when we do that, we will be a tough team to beat.”
