Melvin Kiner, 83 of Montezuma and formerly of Altoona, passed away Friday morning, October 7, 2016 at the Montezuma Specialty Care. Melvin (Mel) Robert Kiner, was born on January 28, 1933 at Montezuma, Iowa, to Charles and Frances Western Kiner.

Mel attended grade school at the Ewart Country School and graduated from the Montezuma Community Schools in 1951.

Mel farmed for two years before entering the U.S. Army where he became a Proficiency Testing Instructor. He was honorably discharged and came back to the family farm from 1955 until 1958.

Mel married Evelyn Ennenga in 1960 at Winterset, Iowa, and in 1962 their son Cary was born.

Mel then entered college where he obtained his B.A. in 1960 from William Penn College, his M.S. from Drake University in 1964 and his Specialist in Education degree from Drake University in 1968.

Mel taught at several schools and also enjoyed coaching. He began his administrative work in 1965 serving as Elementary Coordinator at Independence, Superintendent of Schools also at Independence and lastly as an Elementary Principal of the Des Moines Public Schools from 1970 until 1994.

Mel enjoyed his retirement and spent his free time golfing, traveling and was an avid sports football fan. He enjoyed his grandchildren and served as a volunteer for several organizations. Mel was a member of the Des Moines Elementary Principal’s Organiation, Des Moines School Administration, School Administrators of Iowa, and the National Association of Elementary School Principals. He was also a member of the Altoona United Methodist Church.

Mel is survived by his son Cary (& Beth) Kiner of Craig, Nebraska; his grandchildren: Desiree (& Ray) Glanzer of Carpenter, South Dakota, Jay (& Melissa) Nance of Omaha, Nebraska, Cheree (& James) Sims of Fort Worth, Texas and Cameron Kiner of Pella, Iowa; Great-grandchilderen: Aiden, Daunte, Ava, Henry, William, Jack, Kael, Charlie and Amari; sisters-in-law: Carol Espeland and Shirley McBride; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Evelyn; and his brothers, Charles and Wilmer.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at the Altoona United Methodist Church.
Burial will be held at 2:30 pm at the Pleasant Township Cemetery at Ewart, Iowa.
Visitation will be held on Monday, October 10, 2016 from noon until 4:00 pm at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma.
Visitation will continue from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Altoona United Methodist Church in Altoona with the family present.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Montezuma United Methodist Church or the Altoona United Methodist Church.
