Dogs and their owners took on the K9 5k to benefit Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter on Saturday.

Oskaloosa, Iowa- The Stephen Memorial K9 5k is in its 5th year now, and is the 3rd one to see sunshine after the first two were washed out by the rain.

Nearly 40 people participated in this years event.

For Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter, the 5k event is important for them. It helps them to raise thousands of needed dollars every year. That money is used to buy supplies to take care of the animals brought into the shelter.

The fundraisers, like the 5k and caramel apple sales, make up a significant portion of the shelter’s budget. Government funds account for approximately 30% of all revenue to the shelter, and then the balance comes from donations and adoption fees.

All of the finishing dogs and their owners were able to take home a medal for their effort.

Those not interested in racing were able to take part in the 1 mile walk.
