Dickerson To Defend Title In Burlington

Oskaloosa, Iowa – With a title defense coming up this week, mixed-martial arts fighter and Oskaloosa son, Cody Dickerson, says he may be facing his biggest challenge yet.

Dickerson, a graduate of Oskaloosa High School and former wrestler at William Penn, turned to the MMA to further reach his own personal goals.

Dickerson says that he was never aiming to be in the spotlight, and didn’t try to misbehave because he would have to answer to his mom.

After meeting Chris Dunn, Dickerson took his training to the next stage. Dunn and Dickerson then started traveling to train with former UFC fighters. “It’s a constant motivation to get better every day. If I can be a little bit better than yesterday, then that’s all I’m aiming for.”

Dickerson is pretty mild-mannered outside the ring, “especially when I was like this little nerdy kid”, but is known as a fierce competitor inside the ring. “I just look at it as a sport. I don’t think of it as a fight. I don’t think of it any different than going out for a wrestling match.”

Dickerson describes stepping into the cage as a “human chess match, and I’m just trying to outmaneuver the person”.

“I don’t go in there [the cage] thinking bad intentions, or any anger or emotions, it’s just business”, says Dickerson of taking on his opponent. “That’s what I love about this sport. It’s two guys go in, the winner comes out.”

On October 15th, Dickerson will be putting his bantamweight title belt on the line against an 11-1 opponent, at the Tru Revelation MMA event in Burlington. Dickerson said this fight will be the toughest test he’s had so far.

Dickerson claimed the belt after defeating the 11-1 champion. “I took him out in under a minute, and I’m looking to do the same thing on October 15th”.

Dickerson said he’s not intimidated by his opponent’s record and history. “No, not at all. I love the challenge.”
