Charles Henry Lanphier, 89, of Eddyville, died Friday, September 30, 2016, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. Chuck was born April 2, 1927, at Harvey, Iowa, the son of Fred Earl and Viola Estella Johnson Lanphier.

Chuck graduated from Tracy High School with the class of 1945. Following high school, he served in the United States Navy, and was honorably discharged in July of 1946.

On October 9, 1949, he was united in marriage to Betty JoAnn Ross in Oskaloosa, Betty died March 26, 1973. On September 7, 1973, he was united in marriage to LaVon Briggs and they later divorced.

Chuck worked at the Newton Foundry for over 17 years. He later worked for Mahaska County driving truck and mowing. Last he worked at Cablevey, retiring from there in April of 1989.

On June 21, 1984, he was united in marriage to Frances J. Beadle at Oskaloosa, she died February 14, 1989. On March 5, 1990, Chuck was united in marriage to June Ellis at Tracy, June died on June 9, 2008.

Chuck was a member of the V.F.W. and the Bellefountaine American Legion Post 647, he was also a member of the Tracy United Methodist Church. He attended Faith Community Church in Eddyville for many years.

His family includes his two sons, Gary (& Julie Crile) Lanphier of Oskaloosa and Carey “Curly” Lanphier of Oskaloosa; Marilyn Readshaw “the daughter he never had” of New Sharon; five grandchildren: Sara (& Justin) Larson, Jodi (& Brad) Johnson, Mary “Marv” (& Adam) Crile, Kristi (& Jason) Anderson and Levi (& Buffy) Ritz; thirteen great grandchildren; two sisters: Mabel Boyer of Dexter, Oregon and Maribelle (& Norman) Riddle of Pella; two brothers: Howard (& Linda) Lanphier of Oskaloosa and Paul (& Pic) Lanphier of Oskaloosa; and a special friend, Bonnie Stout of New Sharon.

In addition to his wives, Chuck was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Terry and Larry Lanphier; four brothers: Kenneth, Robert, Jerrold and Bill Lanphier; and five sisters: Frieda Christianson, Maxine Faulkner, Clara Olson, Nellie Farmer, and Phyllis Van Der Veer.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, October 5, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Richard Grimes officiating.
As was Chuck’s wish his body has been cremated.
Burial of the urn will be in the Bellefountaine Cemetery at a later date.
Military honors will be given on the front lawn of the Bates Funeral Chapel by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. on Wednesday immediately following the memorial service. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Tuesday morning after 9:00 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Tuesday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Bellefountaine Cemetery Veteran Memorial Project.
