Oskaloosa, Iowa – The United Way of Mahaska County held their annual Day of Caring last week, and teams from several service organizations, businesses, and others teamed up to make a difference in the community.

A group from Bank Iowa tackled projects at the Ecumenical Cupboard, while the Mahaska Young Professionals helped the Oskaloosa Chamber and Main Street organizations get their move into a new location underway. MidWestOne chipped in to paint at New Hope Community Center, and to help a disabled person stain their deck.

These were just a few of the many teams that were out serving Oskaloosa.

United Way of Mahaska County Director, Amy Meyer, spoke about the great work being accomplished with the aid of 200 volunteers.

Meyer said that those 200 volunteers were tackling a total of 16 projects.

Day of Caring is the start for United Way’s fundraising campaign.

Meyer said that over the next couple of months, she will be visiting with businesses and individuals presenting different ways they can support the United Way.

Workplace campaign is the “bread and butter” for the organization to raise money over the year. That money is typically raised when individuals donate a dollar or more from their paycheck every week to United Way. “It’s really a good way for that money to really add up and make a big impact, when hopefully, you don’t really notice a dollar or two coming out your check”, says Meyer.

“Our focus of the campaign this year is getting everyone engaged in the community, because I really feel like that’s the way we’re really going to have a huge impact,” said Meyer of the spirit of volunteerism that makes just as big or bigger impact than money.

Merri Chris Hawker with MidwestOne Insurance Services said that, “it’s just nice to be able to help someone that can’t do this kind of stuff… I think anybody that can give a half a day or a full day; just the fulfillment you get when you know you helped somebody…. It’s just a good, good feeling”.
