Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Oskaloosa City Council once again tackled a request from an Oskaloosa resident in regard to the cutting and removal of weeds by the City.

Last meeting, two individuals came before the council with a similar problem of acquiring a property after the assessment by the City had taken place, but before it could be recorded with the deed to the property.

This week, an area resident, Debra Osborn, spoke about her concern that she didn’t receive notice that her property was in violation.

The City posts those notices in the legal section of the print paper, and also on its website, but no notice is sent directly to the landowner.

The council voted to bill the other four properties, but moved her assessment to the next meeting to determine if the infraction was in the alley, or on Osborn’s property.

The Oskaloosa Police Department made a presentation to the council on the Crime Free Multi-Housing Program.

This program is designed to reduce crime, drugs and gang activity in apartment communities and other rental units. The program provides instruction to rental owners and managers on how to keep drug and illegal activity off their property. The program is a coalition of police, property managers and residents of rental properties sharing information to reduce criminal activity.

The program will be implemented on a voluntary basis in the near future.

The council took on the ordinance to approve parking restrictions along Parkview Lane. This property is near the Industrial softball field on the southeast section of Edmundson Park.

Residents spoke up and told the council that they didn’t want the parking restriction, but instead to have the council work to inform the users of the field about the parking policy that is already in place for the street. The council agreed to “codify” the parking situation, to make it easier to enforce parking violations.

On a 4-3 vote, the Oskaloosa City Council agreed to set a public hearing date to amend the Oskaloosa City Code pertaining to sidewalk requirements.

The public hearing for those requirements is set for October 3, 2016 at 6pm in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.
