Money. It’s a topic business start-ups, entrepreneurs, and business owners address daily. Whether it’s learning how to make ends meet or finding money to address successful expansion, the topic generated a lively discussion Friday morning when The Exchange for Entrepreneurs hosted special guest Bryan Ziegler and his presentation “Finding Money.”

Ziegler is the Regional Director of The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) located on the Indian Hills Community College campus in Ottumwa and is one of several SBDC locations across Iowa. Ziegler, and the Indian Hills location, has assisted existing businesses and entrepreneurs since 1984.

Friday’s discussion touched on different funding opportunities – start-up money, business loans, personal loans, grants, foundations, and venture capital – as well as money fundamentals.

“We have a tendency to think bank loans first,” said Ziegler to the Exchange group who had assembled at Smokey Row for the 7:30 a.m. presentation. “The debt will fall back on you personally. Your credit score, personal assets, and financial history impacts a bank’s decision and loan amounts. Debt, however, isn’t necessarily a bad thing when gaining is your goal. … In this whole process of financing, you must be determined to keep going. Don’t give up.”

Ziegler touched on other ‘finding money’ opportunities such as REDI and SBA loans, grants and foundations. He indicated venture capital opportunities are very rare and, “I’ve never seen venture capital deal in my 31 years with SDBC in fact.”

Though ‘finding money’ was the primary topic, the importance of continuing to work hard for your business, having good business plans, and not being afraid of risk were consistence undercurrents. Ziegler mentioned several times he and SBDC can help. Consultations are free and services include a variety of areas: planning, acquisition, financial analysis, management, marketing, and other areas as requested.
