Nellie May Smith, 72, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, August 13, 2016, at her home in Oskaloosa. She was born Tuesday, February 1, 1944, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Winfield S. and Martina F. Sparks Poe.

Nellie attended Oskaloosa High School, graduating with the class of 1962.

Following school, Nellie worked at the Big Smith Overall Factory in Oskaloosa and at various retail stores in Oskaloosa.

On July 10, 1976, Nellie was united in marriage to Michael Smith in Oskaloosa.

She enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, embroidery and crafts.

Nellie is survived by her husband, Mike Smith of Oskaloosa; two daughters: Elizabeth Padgett of Albia and Tina (& Ed) Gordon of Oskaloosa; two sons: Jerry Mateer, Jr. of Oskaloosa and Richard (& Joyce) Mateer of Delta; two step daughters: Katherine Smith of Oskaloosa and Tina Smith of University Park; six grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; a brother, Winfield “Bud” (& Lucille) Poe of Oskaloosa; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Michael David Carter; two brothers: Bob Poe and George Poe; and two sisters: Mary Jane Lane and Juanita Yeo.

Graveside services and burial will be held Wednesday, August 17, 2016, at 10:30 A.M. in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating.
As was her wish, Nellie’s body has been cremated.
No visitation is planned.
Memorials may be made to the Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter.
