Program: Prohibition in Eastern Iowa

by Linda Betsinger McCann

In Bradbury Hall at Nelson Pioneer Farm and Museum

Prohibition was a 13 year period in U.S. history when it was illegal to manufacture, sell or transport liquor. But, it turned many citizens into criminals. Why did farmers need to do this in order to support their families? Linda spoke with the children of bootleggers and moonshiners and was surprised at their response. Al Capone was in Iowa, and there were murders here also. Linda discovered many items that surprised her and includes examples of the craziness in her books. She will have specific instances of this area when she speaks.
