Oskaloosa, Iowa | Age 89

Phyllis Eveland, 89, of Oskaloosa passed away Sunday evening, August 7, 2016, at the Mahaska Health Partnership Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa.

Phyllis Mae Eveland, daughter of Fred H. and Elsie M. (Allsup) Parlet, was born June 22, 1927, at the Mahaska County rural home of her parents near Wright.

Phyllis was a 1945 graduate of Cedar High School. Following graduation, she worked in a retail shop in Oskaloosa.

Phyllis’ sister-in-law, Alice, introduced Phyllis to her brother, John William Eveland, a young pilot recently discharged from the air force. May 25, 1947, she married John, and they began their life together on his family’s farm in Jefferson Township. They raised their family on that farm and Phyllis was John’s partner in making the farm a success.

Phyllis always had a large garden and canned and froze it’s bounty for the coming year. She was in charge of the chickens and sold eggs and helped John with the harvesting. Their farm was designated a Heritage Farm in 2006 by the Iowa Department of Agriculture.

With her husband, John, Phyllis was active in the Knights of Pythias. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa and was active in the Esther Circle, Sunday school, and the quilting group. She was also a member of the Coal Creek Ladies Aid. Quilting and embroidery were Phyllis’ passions; as a result, her family has many items to cherish, including numerous quilts, pillow cases, and dish towel sets.

Her family includes her children and their spouses: John L. (& Karen) Eveland of Fort Dodge, Larry F. (& Dianne) Eveland of Cedar Rapids, and Connie M. Eveland of West Des Moines; grandchildren: Brian (& Nancy) Eveland of Osage Beach, MO, Craig Eveland of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Dustin Eveland of Aurora, IL, Stacie Eveland of Cedar Rapids, IA and Kristofer (& Kristin) Eveland of Tipton, IA; and four great-grandchildren: Luke, Emily, Ryker and Tesla.

In addition to her parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, John on Feb. 20, 2015; her brothers, Kenneth and Max Parlet; and a sister, Gladys Howells.

Funeral services for Phyllis will be held at 10:30 am, Thursday, August 11, 2016, at the Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Rev. Tim Johnson of the First Christian Church officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., Wednesday at the funeral chapel; the family will be present from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday evening to greet visitors.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or MHP Hospice Services Serenity House.
