School Board Hires Interim Curriculum Director

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Oskaloosa School Board met in a special meeting on Tuesday, August 2nd, 2016 to discuss the hiring of an interim curriculum director, and to receive an update from Superintendent Russ Reiter about the early childhood development and recreation project.

Joy Prothero was hired to be the curriculum director, a role she once held for the Pella School District, and she has served at both Central College and William Penn University in their educational departments. “Her knowledge of current educational information is good, because she serves as President of the Great Prairie AEA Board as well as on the state AEA board,” says Reiter.

Prothero was hired with an unanimous vote from the board, with the exception of Sharma Parlett, who abstained from the vote. Parlett has served with Prothero previously.

Oskaloosa School Superintendent Russ Reiter updated the board about the school’s involvement in the planning and potential funding of a proposed early childhood development and recreation center.

Reiter said that the amount the school district will be able to legally contribute to the project will depend upon final designs submitted by the architect.

The school had previously agreed to pay up to 7.5 million dollars of the originally proposed 24 million dollar project. That amount could change to a lesser amount, depending upon the design of the new facility.

Oskaloosa School Board member Carl Drost asked to be a part of the ongoing discussions between the city and school, and the architects.

No official action was taken by the school on this subject, and was only for informational purpose only.
