Oskaloosa, Iowa – Mahaska County Sheriff Paul DeGeest confirmed to Oskaloosa News on Monday morning that his office, along with the state fire marshal, was investigating a fire to equipment used for the installation of the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Fire crews and investigators arrived at a location along the pipeline route at 175th Street and Kent Avenue, west of Lacey, early on Sunday morning. The New Sharon Fire Department was first on the scene.

DeGeest said that four different pieces of equipment were set on fire, and that there are similarities to a fire in Jasper County. No official estimate of the damage in Mahaska County was given, but was thought to be near 1 million dollars.

Newton Daily News said that Jasper County Sheriff confirmed to them another incident about 4.5 miles to the west of Newton, where an additional three pieces of equipment appeared to be set on fire.

A third location near Reasnor is also being investigated.
