The Oskaloosa Indians used a big inning to defeat Norwalk, completing a season sweep of their conference rival.

The Indians used a two out scoring burst to put away the #11 team in the state.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Oskaloosa Indians softball team has been a solid contender for the past few years, and this year is no different.

The Indians are ranked 4th in the state, owning a 24-3 record after defeating Norwalk at home on the 29th.

Oskaloosa Head Coach Jay Harms said that the team has been playing well, and the win over Norwalk was a nice way to end the Conference season.
A season that has the Indians coming out on top as the Little Hawkeye Conference Champions.

Harms said that sweeping Norwalk for the season was something they, as a team haven’t done in a long time. “I’m very proud of this group”.

The opening of Conference play was tough, when the Indians fell to Pella Christian, “and then to come back and only have two losses in a very tough Conference, with 6 of 7 teams ranked, this says a lot about the kids”, added Harms.

“It’s a dogfight every night out,” says Harms of conference play. “We found ways to win.”

“We’ve got one part of our season done, winning the Conference”, says Harms. “We still have a journey in front of us and we’re looking forward to finishing it. It’s not where you start, it’s where you finish”.

On Tuesday night, the Indians close out their regular season against Knoxville at home.

Game time is slated for 7:30 pm.

The Indians were tied with Norwalk 1-1 until the bottom of the 6th inning, when, with the bases loaded, Sophomore Anna Jone hits in 2 runners.

Still in the 6th inning, with 2 out, Alexis Westercamp steps up to the plate.

She was hitless on the night so far, but the sense was she was due.

Westercamp nailed a grand slam home run off the Norwalk pitcher for the final runs in the game, and the Indians came out on top, 7-1.

Westercamp told Oskaloosa News afterwards that she was only looking for a base hit to, “get a runner in”.

Westercamp said smiling, “I guess it went” speaking of the long ball over the fence.

*update*

The Indians walked away from the weekend tournament 1-3 after facing the top 5 teams in Class 4A and 5A.

Coach Harms said going into the weekend he knew it would be tough, but hoped to use the games “to fine tune some things”.
