MAHASKA COUNTY – Though summer is a time of fun, free time and adventure, Mahaska Health Partnership reminds caregivers to keep a watch out for safety hazards, especially for their little ones.

“With school no longer in session, kids have much more free time each day,” Family Nurse Practitioner Lisa Smith said. “Whether it’s a trip to the park, playing in the backyard or going to the local pool, keeping safety in mind is an easy way to make sure everyone has lots of fun!”

When going to the playground, Smith suggests choosing one with mulch or rubber padding in case of falls. “Before you head out the door, ensure your kids wear proper footwear to protect them from falls or cuts when running around. Find a playground that is suitable for your child’s age and ability to maximize fun! Check the temperature of equipment prior to use, especially if it’s metal, in case it’s too hot. Also check for broken glass or other hazards that may be scattered where your children will be playing.”

For activities involving water, make sure your children have the right gear to stay safe. “Children should be equipped with proper floatation devices at all times, including when near the water or inside a boat,” Smith urged. “Pack goggles and swim shoes for extra protection and make sure they don’t run, push or jump near the water. Things can happen quickly, so make sure they know their limits and are in your sight at all times.”

Smith also advises signing your children up for swimming lessons. “Getting your child comfortable with swimming is another way to ensure their safety. Lessons can help build confidence in your child both in and out of the water, plus they can be fun too! Developing swimming skills at a young age can help keep them safe for years to come.”

For bicycle rides and other outdoor activities, the key is to wear proper equipment. “I urge parents to make it a house rule that no bikes move unless there’s a helmet on your head first,” Smith suggested. “Other protective gear like elbow pads or knee pads might be beneficial for someone learning to ride too. Make sure your children know the rules of the road and take precautions when around traffic too.

“Having a first aid kit with all of the essentials can be a big help too, especially when dealing with those rough and tough players,” Smith quipped. “Bug spray, snacks and a good place to cool off are also things to keep in mind when planning your outdoor adventure!”

Smith explained how taking some small steps every time your child goes outside to protect them can make a big difference in their summer fun. “Before any outdoor adventure, lather on some sunscreen, preferably a broad-spectrum one with at least 30 SPF applied at least every two hours. Pack water to keep hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during the midday sun, and don’t leave children to their own devices. Remembering these tips can make sure everyone has a great time outdoors!”
