MAHASKA COUNTY – Mahaska Health Partnership welcomes Nurse Practitioner Bryon Bellinger, ARNP-C, as our newest Hospitalist provider.

“We began our Hospitalist program in 2013 and it has greatly enhanced outcomes for our patients,” Hospitalist Medical Director Anne Whitis, MD, said. “As we have adapted the program for MHP, we have adjusted our staffing to include two practitioners on duty for each shift. This provides a better balance and allows the providers to spend more one-on-one time with each patient.”

According to Dr. Whitis, a Hospitalist is a medical provider who is solely dedicated to caring for patients in the hospital. They act as a patient’s primary care provider during an inpatient stay, then transfer care back to a patient’s regular provider upon discharge from the hospital. The presence of a Hospitalist in the inpatient setting makes them more accessible to nursing staff, patients and their families. They are available to answer questions, adjust treatment plans and consult whenever needed.

Bellinger is not new to MHP; he completed his Nurse Practitioner degree while working in the Emergency Department. “I have spent my entire career working in emergency medicine,” Bellinger shared. “I had often wondered what happened to patients when they were admitted to the hospital or transferred.

“Working as a Hospitalist allows me to care for people over a longer period of time and often participate in their care and final diagnosis.”

Bellinger said he is looking forward to continuing his career at MHP, “This feels like home to me. I thoroughly enjoy the people here and in the community.

“The Hospitalist program benefits our patients because we get to focus all of our attention solely on people admitted to the hospital,” Bellinger explained. “We can spend more time with them and I look forward to applying the holistic principals of nursing in my new role.”

Bellinger describes himself as a good listener who deeply cares for people. He and his family live outside New Sharon and, when not caring for patients at MHP, Bellinger enjoys the great outdoors.
