Sharing and saving nearly lost skills, but having fun along the way.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – Making rope and making fine crafts from string, yarn, and other materials is someone of a lost art. A group of individuals hopes to keep the skills alive for the next generation.

This past weekend, the American Ropemakers were at Nelson Pioneer Farm, where they shared their skills of making rope, the longest of the day being nearly 300 foot long.

Other skills shared included spinning, weaving, lace making, and quilting.

Milton Vos, a Mahaska County resident who is part of the American Ropemakers group, shared his 28 years of experience in rope making with the visitors to Nelson Pioneer Farm.

Vos is no stranger to making large sections of rope. He was part of a group of individuals who made a 1,400-foot rope at Living History Farms in Des Moines.

Besides making rope, Vos collects various rope-making machines and tools, which he had on display.

The weekend of rope making usually takes place the weekend before Father’s Day, but some scheduling pushed it back this year. The plan is to have it at Nelson Pioneer Farm once again next year, the weekend before Father’s Day, before it moves on to a new location.
