Quilts done with a modern twist.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – At the Oskaloosa Art Center. Many different types of art forms can be found. The traditional paintbrush or pencil can easily be found, but one might not think of pulling out their sewing machine to make art.

Sigourney area artist Stephanie Atwood has a different look at quilting. Atwood learned the art of quilting from her mother-in-law when she was 19 years-old, and has since developed her own style. That style often breaks many of the traditional formats of quilting, but the expression in thread is all Atwood’s.

The canvas for Atwood is often a piece of silk linen that she then paints with dye and quilts into her works of art. An example of her work that was hanging during the show was called the ‘Creation Series’. They were based upon bible verses and included the topics ‘Light’, ‘Water and Land’ and ‘Vegetation’.

The Oskaloosa Art Center’s own Sarah Kargol, known for her ‘monsters’ series of paintings, spoke about the fabric show and what new things the center hopes to bring to the community.

Kargol expressed that she has been thrilled with the response by the community with the quilts. “I think it’s touched on a different group in Oskaloosa who are interested in quilting or contemporary fabric arts. I’ve been really excited about this show”.

The Oskaloosa Art Center has hosted several shows over recent history, including; tatoo, art on wheels and skateboard deck shows among others. “We’re really reaching out to a lot of different demographics in the community and surrounding area”, says Kargol.

In the near future, a photography show will showcase the work of Iowa photographers covering politics, specifically presidential politics.
