Over 1000 Oskaloosa Elementary students posed for this picture on Friday.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – Oskaloosa Elementary celebrated the last day of school with a group photo.

The idea for the photo came from Mike Dursky, Principal at Oskaloosa Elementary School. The students enjoy the extra activity, and it helps to create a broader sense of belonging for the students as they progress through the district.

Those days in elementary at the stadium help connect those later days in high school, also at the stadium.

Another benefit to moving all the students from the elementary to the stadium is understanding better what takes place if an evacuation from the elementary building was necessary.

For Physical Education Teacher Jennifer Peterson, the opportunity to have the students on the turf engaging in extra physical activity, in a fun and positive fashion, is also a huge benefit. The extra time in activity is part of the ‘Go The Distance’ event for Live Healthy Iowa.

The 30 minutes of extra exercise as part of the picture event “is a fun way for them to get involved and get the whole school involved, but can be a challenge with over 1000 students.”

The more than 1000 students and teachers all filled in from one 40 yard line to the other 40 yard line for the end of the year photo. The students then made their way to lunch for the last time this school year.
