Oskaloosa–All games down the stretch are critical towards postseason qualification and now the William Penn baseball team will have to work even harder as it came up short in a 3-1 Heart of America Athletic Conference loss to Central Methodist Thursday.

The Statesmen I9-20, 9-15 Heart) were looking for the season split after losing two of three to the Eagles (32-13, 17-7 Heart) on April 9-10. Thursday’s game was the conclusion of this year’s four-game set that was postponed nearly two weeks due to rain.

Thursday’s action began scoreless in the top of the second inning and remained void of any scoring until the fifth frame. CMU then tallied the first run in the top half of the fifth and doubled its edge with another score in the sixth.

Steven Sattz (Sr., Pickering, Ontario, Physical Education) trimmed the deficit to one run in the bottom of the sixth, but the navy and gold unfortunately failed to plate the tying run later in the frame. Central Methodist then pushed the margin back to two in the seventh and would go on for the two-run win.

Cory Russell (Jr., El Cajon, Calif., Education) managed two hits, while the Statesmen were outhit 8-7. Dakota Herman (Fr., Woodland Park, Colo., Biology) tossed a solid complete game, striking out seven versus four walks in the setback.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Marshall, Mo. this weekend to face Missouri Valley in a pair of Heart doubleheaders. Both Saturday and Sunday’s twinbills begin at 1 p.m.
