Oskaloosa residents will soon see a splash of color, as 88.7 KIGC “The Kitchen” of William Penn University and Fine Arts and Culture Events (FACE) of Mahaska County prepare for the annual “Chalk the Walk” event. This event will be held on Saturday, April 30 beginning at 10:30 am and running until 12:30 pm.

The event will take place at the Oskaloosa Elementary School K-2 playground, where families can come and show off their artistic skills. Participants are able to purchase a 12 foot by 10 foot cement “canvas” for $10, or $8 per square if art supplies are donated. Participants are encouraged to bring their own chalk, but there will be a small supply of chalk on hand as well.

All proceeds from this event will go United Way of Mahaska County to support Operation Backpack. Operation Backpack provides children with the essential supplies needed to help them excel in their education. Last year this event pulled in just under $250 and event organizers hope to raise $400 this year.

Students from the Digital Communication program have been teaming up with KIGC student staff to help build up this event around town, through social media, and on campus. Chalk the Walk event organizer Amanda DeVore is hoping to also build off of last year’s success. “I am very excited for this event. I am glad that we are able to continue the tradition started three years ago by KIGC, and I hope that we can reach, if not exceed, our fundraising goal for the United Way of Mahaska County,” said DeVore.

FACE aims to provide art and art education to Mahaska county residents, and has been a part of this project from the beginning. FACE President Briana Bartlett is excited about the event, and is looking forward to the displays of hidden artistic talent in the Oskaloosa area. “Chalk the Walk is such a great event. Each year we’ve seen it grow. We love to see families and friends come out and draw together and just have fun,” said Bartlett.

In the event of inclement weather the event will be moved to Saturday, May 14. For further information please contact Amanda DeVore at 641-676-3400 or email her at devorea@wmpenn.edu.

Everyone in and around the area is encouraged to participate, leave a mark, and give back to the community, all while making memories with friends and loved ones.
