Marion Theresa Sodak, 90, of Oskaloosa, and a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Church in Oskaloosa, died Sunday, April 17, 2016, at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. On July 5, 1925, Marion was born in the Johnson County village of Oasis, Iowa, the daughter of John “Jack” and his wife Mary Agnes Coleman Hensley.

When Marion was an infant the family moved to Oskaloosa where she resided for the remainder of her life. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1943.

Following graduation, Marion went to work for Mathew Lumber Company as a bookkeeper. On November 28, 1949, she was united in marriage to Irving F. “Sody” Sodak, of Evans, Iowa, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa. The two of them established their home and family in Oskaloosa. With her beloved husband ‘Sody’ she bore and raised five children: Patrick, Mary, Kathy, Diane, and Michael.

After her children were raised, Marion went to work for the Oskaloosa Community School District as a cook.

The center of Marion’s world was her faith and her family. She enjoyed supporting her children and grandchildren in their various activities. She also enjoyed many family trips to Branson, Missouri. In her later years she grew very fond of music, she was a generous supporter of the Oskaloosa Chamber Music Festival.

Sody died on May 3, 2009. Marion stayed in her home until October of 2014. She then moved to Crystal Height Care Center, where she was met and cared for by a loving and compassionate staff. Marion and her family found great peace in the care she received while living at the care center.

Her family includes five children: (John) Patrick (& Kham) Sodak of Oskaloosa, Mary Jo (& Craig) Akers of Albia, Kathy (& Tony) Sedrel of Oskaloosa, Diane (& Andy) Davis of Oskaloosa, and Mike (& Trina) Sodak of Oskaloosa; 12 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; a sister, Kay D’Agostino of Oskaloosa; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband Irving, Marion was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Eileen Smith.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Thursday, April 21, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend John Spiegel officiating.
Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Oskaloosa.
Visitation will begin Wednesday, April 20, 2016, after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel.
A Rosary will be recited Wednesday evening at 5:30 in the Bates Funeral Chapel. Visitation with the family present will follow the Rosary until 7:30 Wednesday evening. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorial may be made to the Oskaloosa Symphony for the benefit of the Oskaloosa Music Festival.
