Harold L. Voss, 88, of Oskaloosa, died Friday, March 4, 2016, at Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa. Harold was born Sunday, March 4, 1928, in Oskaloosa, the son of George and Ruth Cox Voss.

Following school Harold farmed with his parents for several years. In 1950, Harold joined the U.S. Army. During his service with the First Calvary, Harold attained the rank of First Sergeant and also received a Purple Heart. He was discharged in 1952. Harold made a profession of faith as a young man. He was proud of the fact that no soldiers in his charge were killed on the front lines and credited this to his strong faith.

On March 11, 1952, Harold was united in marriage to Gladys Waddell in Beacon.

Following his discharge, Harold worked for a window manufacturer in Ottumwa. He then moved to Oskaloosa and delivered bottle gas for Allied Gas. He then worked for Waal and Rexroth building new homes until moving to Des Moines where he worked laying ceramic tile flooring. Later, Harold and Gladys moved back to Oskaloosa where they began building new homes and remodeling. He worked in construction until his retirement. He loved gardening, his bushes, and flowers, and was very proud of his peach trees. He also loved fishing and mushroom hunting with his sons.

His family includes his wife of nearly 64 years, Gladys Voss of Oskaloosa; four sons: Darrell (& Dawn) Voss of Rose Hill, Leroy Voss of Oskaloosa, David Voss of Oskaloosa, and Lyle (& Kathy) Voss of Des Moines; five grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; two sisters: Darlene Hogate of Oskaloosa, and Donna Ruth Gordon of Oskaloosa; and a brother: Ronald Voss of Oskaloosa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Lester, Dale, and Jerry Voss; a twin brother: Howard Voss; and a sister: Carolyn Sereg.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at 10 A.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with Reverend David Brown officiating.
Burial will be in Tioga Cemetery southeast of Rose Hill.
Graveside Military Rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Monday, March 7, 2016 after 10 A.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with the family present at the funeral chapel Monday from 5 – 7 P.M. to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Harold Voss Memorial Fund.
