MAHASKA COUNTY – Mahaska Health Partnership is pleased to welcome Family Nurse Practitioner Tonya Johannes to the Medical Group.

“Tonya has been an MHP team member for three years. Her dedication to our organization and her work ethic make her a wonderful patient advocate,” MHP CEO Jay Christensen said.

Johannes recently graduated from Maryville University with her Master’s of Science in Nursing, a degree she completed while working fulltime at MHP as the Education Coordinator and also as an adjunct professor for the Indian Hills College of Nursing.

“I love teaching,” Johannes shared. “Learning for myself and educating patients fuels my passion for knowledge.”

Johannes’ drive has been evident throughout her nursing career. She worked as a CNA at a nursing home after high school while attending Indian Hills for her LPN/RN. After working in the nursing home for eight years, she wanted to diversify her experience so transferred to hospital nursing and teaching for Indian Hills after completing her Bachelors of Science in Nursing at the University of Iowa. Johannes then served as an infection control, employee health nurse, and flex nurse working in wound care, dermatology and the infusion clinic before coming to MHP.

“It was important to me to have a very well-rounded view of patient care,” Johannes stressed. “A person’s needs during hospitalization are very different than in an outpatient or nursing home setting. Through my various roles, I gained firsthand experience caring for wounds, geriatric populations, people with diabetes along with typical infections and illnesses.”

Johannes is excited to put her experience to work in a primary care setting. “I feel all the care settings I have been in enhance my ability to care for my patients. I love learning and I never give up. When a patient comes to me with a problem, I’m excited to sort it out, find a solution and help my patients understand how to best care for themselves.”

A special interest for Johannes is skin care. “I worked alongside a dermatologist in my clinical rotations, so I could learn how to treat special skin issues such as acne, aging skin and eczema. There are so many options for patients before they have to use extreme treatments; I’m excited to teach these methods.”

Johannes is now accepting patients, age six months and older, at the MHP Medical Group. For an appointment, call 641.672.3360. For an opportunity to meet Johannes, attend MHP’s Business After Hours on Tuesday, Feb. 23 from 4-6 pm in the Cedar Bluff Learning Center (ent. #3) on the MHP campus.
