The flag flying over the bandstand during the month of January is in honor of William C. Burbank.

He was inducted into the Army, December 18, 1942, at Ft. Des Moines, Iowa. His specialty was a light truck driver. He distinguished himself by serving in Luzon, Bismarck, Archipelago and the New Guinea campaigns for which he was awarded three Bronze Stars. He was discharged September 17, 1945.

Upon his return to Oskaloosa, Bill was hired by Blue Ribbon Distributors and drove a beer truck. He went on to work for Iowa Power and Light, where he initially worked on boilers, then on the gas service crew and later drove a truck for the line crew. He retired in 1983, after working for Iowa Power and Light for 30 years.
