Jareld Shilling, 81, of What Cheer died Monday, November 23, 2015 at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center. Jareld Eugene Shilling, son of Phillip and Catherine Stockdale Shilling, was born on April 6, 1934 in Ottumwa, Iowa.

Jareld attended school through the eighth grade at Bunker Hill country school near Floris. On December 28, 1951 he was united in marriage to Betty Lou Clark in Ottumwa. To this union five children were born.

Jareld worked twenty three years at John Morrell & Company, fifteen years in construction and several more as a janitor at the University of Iowa Hospital before retiring.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and watching rodeos. Jareld was quite the prankster to his family and absolutely adored his grandchildren. From time to time, he could be a bit hard headed, yet Jareld often went without so his family got what they wanted. He will be remembered as a strong-willed man full of honesty and forgiveness.

Jareld is survived by a daughter, Carol (& Mike) Bensmiller of Sigourney; three sons: Jerald (& Katy) Shilling of Des Moines, Mark (& JoAnn) Shilling of Rose Hill and Phillip (& Susan) Shilling of Thornburg; a brother, Phillip (& Nancy) Shilling of Ottumwa; three sisters: Phyllis (& Frank) Mills of Kirksville, MO, Bonnie (& Chester) Harden of Eddyville, and Paulette (& Kenny) Groet of Oskaloosa. He also leaves behind a legacy of eight grandchildren and twenty one great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty; an infant daughter, Lila Sue Shilling; and a great grandson, Teagon Fowler.

Funeral services will begin at 1:00 pm on Saturday, November 28, 2015 at the Lancaster Christian Church at Lancaster, Iowa.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 am at the church with the family present.
Burial will be held at the Shaul Cemetery in Ottumwa, Iowa.
