Investigate Sherlock Holmes with the George Daily Youth Theatre
Daily Youth Theatre After School Camp
OSKALOOSA, IA — Celebrate literature’s greatest consulting detective with a Sherlock Holmes after school theatre camp with the George Daily Youth Theatre! Camp starts the week of November 9.
“Sherlock Holmes is a great hero because he’s an action hero, but he doesn’t use violence,” explained Andy McGuire, Education Director at the George Daily Auditorium. “He does what every person has the ability to do, he recognizes patterns and details and puts them together using logic.”
In this performing-based camp, students will look at how Sherlock Holmes solved mysteries. They will work with a script and blocking, as well as creating set pieces. There will be a showcase performance on Friday, December 18 at 7 p.m. for campers to show off what they’ve learned.
“We’re writing an original script for this camp. It’s going to be about two detectives who are fans of Sherlock Holmes, and they think he’s still alive and solving crimes even while the rest of the world thinks he’s dead, so they have to team up with Watson to try to find him,” said McGuire.
Different age groups will meet at different times throughout the week. On Mondays & Tuesdays, 3-5th graders will meet from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. starting on November 9. Kindergarteners through 2nd graders will meet every Wednesday from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. starting on November 11. Campers in 6-8th grade will meet Thursdays & Fridays from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. starting on November 12.
“We do a lot of different things in camp to help hone our theatre skills,” said McGuire. “Mysteries are all about solving problems, so when we play games, they’ll be centered around strategy and problem solving and paying attention to details.”
The rest of the after school program includes Around the World in 80 Days from January 11 – February 12 and Robots! from April 1 – May 7.
“Every camper should wear shoes that enclose the toe and heel, like tennis shoes,” added McGuire. Snacks and a water bottle are also recommended.
