Miriam Current, 96, of Oskaloosa passed away Wednesday, October 7, 2015, at the Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa, Miriam Frances, daughter of William and Murel Swangle Sutphin, was born, April 3, 1919, in Montezuma, Iowa.

Miriam married Cleo E. Current January 3, 1935 in Oskaloosa. They made their home in Rose Hill. In the 1940s, they moved to Oskaloosa and Miriam began working at Montgomery Wards in the shipping department. She would eventually become the manager of the shipping department and when Wards closed she had worked there for 31 years. Miriam was then employed by Howar Shoes and later Brady Shoes, retiring in 2000.

Miriam was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family. Miriam was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and at the time of her death, she was the longest member of the Eagle’s Club.

Her family includes her son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Tillie Current of Indianola, Iowa; a daughter, Carol Vance of Oskaloosa; three granddaughters: Wanda Ballejos of Lakeside, AZ, Cindy (& Calvin) Brown of Lakeside, AZ, and Sue (& Ron) West of Hudson, SD; 8 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandson, Dameon Apocada.

In addition to her parents, Miriam was preceded in death by her husband Cleo, on August 4, 2003; a daughter, Gayle Morgan; a sister, Gelene Jemison; and a brother, Morris Sutphin.

Graveside Funeral Services for Miriam will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday morning, October 10, 2015, at Forest Cemetery with Pastor Mike Dotson of the First Assembly of God Church.
Family and friends may gather at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel on Saturday morning and will depart for the cemetery at 10:15 a.m.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., Friday at the funeral chapel; the family will be present from 5-7 p.m. to greet visitors.
Memorials may be made to MHP Hospice Services or a hospice of their choice.
