Richard “Dick” Jones, 75, of Urbandale, and formerly of Albia, passed away Wednesday, September 30, 2015, at Deerfield Skilled Nursing Center in Urbandale, Iowa. Richard Dennis Jones, son of Howard and Mary Jane (Butler) Jones, was born May 6, 1940, in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

Dick was a 1959 graduate of Oskaloosa High School and later attended William Penn College where he earned his Bachelor’s degree.

Dick married Karen Vieth on April 29, 1967 in Des Moines. The two were married for more than 48 years at the time of his passing.

Dick and Karen initially made their home in Ottumwa, where Dick worked for the Iowa Department of Human Services. In 1977, they moved to Albia where Dick continued his career with DHS, serving as a supervisor and director. He retired in 1999, after more than 30 years of service. Dick and Karen moved to Urbandale in 2011.

Dick enjoyed working in his yard, cooking and grilling, caring for his pets and spending time with family.

He is survived by his wife, Karen of Urbandale; his sons: Derek (& Julie) Jones of Urbandale and Aaron Jones of West Des Moines; a sister, Mary (& Walt) Eidbo of Des Moines; a sister in-law; and two nephews and their families.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws; and a brother in-law.

Dick’s family would like to express their gratitude to the Deerfield Skilled Nursing Center staff for the kind and compassionate care they provided Dick during his time in their facility.

Per his request, Dick’s body has been cremated and no services are planned.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date for family and friends.
