Carrol Walters, 88, of Des Moines and formerly of What Cheer died Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at the Kavanagh House in West Des Moines. Carrol L. Walters, son of Arthur and Artia Herman Walters, was born on September 9, 1926 at Green Castle, Missouri.

When Carrol was a junior in high school his family moved to Gibson, Iowa. He began dating his high school sweetheart Barbara Middleton, and graduated from Gibson High School in 1944. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Army in 1945 and was honorably discharged in 1947. On May 15, 1948 Carrol married Barbara Middleton at the Oskaloosa Methodist Church.

Carrol and Barbara made their home in Gibson and operated the Post Office and the Cottage Café. He became the Gibson Postmaster, where he treated people with kindness and was a great role model. Carrol and Barbara moved to What Cheer in 1952, where he became a rural mail carrier for the What Cheer Post Office. He also farmed in rural What Cheer for many years and loved everything about it; from the smell of the Spring dirt to the sound of the grain dryer in the Fall. Carrol was a Real Estate Broker and a member of the United Methodist Church in What Cheer. They spent their later years in Arizona and moved to West Des Moines in 2009.

He is survived by his wife Barbara of West Des Moines; a son, Jerry Walters of Las Vegas, Nevada; a daughter Peggy (& Steve) Calvert of West Des Moines; three grandchildren: Amanda (& Alan) Kruse of Adel, Brooke Gracey of Portland, Oregon, and Brett Walters of Las Vegas, Nevada; and two great grandchildren, Jacob Kruse and Caitlin Kruse.

Carrol was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers: Iris Walters and Adam Walters.

Funeral services will begin at 2:00 pm on Friday, September 4, 2015 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in What Cheer.
Burial will be in the Sixteen Cemetery at Thornburg.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday.
A luncheon will begin at noon on Friday at the What Cheer United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to: HCI Care Services or West Des Moines Fire & Rescue.
