Leona Berniece Schultz, 95, of Marshalltown and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, August 13, 2015, under the care of Hawkeye Care Center and Iowa River Hospice in Marshalltown. Leona was born September 23, 1919, in Marshall County, the daughter of William Charles and Verna Lois Clark Jubeck.

Leona attended country school at Rock Valley and Le Grand. Following school she worked at Dixie BBQ and later for Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids.

On April 13, 1946, Leona was united in marriage to Harold VanDePol, Harold died September 23, 1978. While they were married Harold was the Sherriff of Mahaska County and Leona cooked for the prisoners in Mahaska County.

Leola also worked at the old Continental Overall Factory in Oskaloosa for 10 years, and lastly Leona was a clerk at the Best Western in Oskaloosa for 23 years. She retired from there in 1987. In retirement she worked at Artistic Floors for a short time.

On June 25, 1987, Leona was united in marriage to Arthur Schultz at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Arthur died December 6, 1999.

Leona was a member of the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa Woman’s Club, Mahaska County Republican Party Women, and the Mahaska County Sherriff Posse. She also volunteered at the Hospital in Oskaloosa.

Leona enjoyed dancing, music, going out for dinner, traveling with the family in the motor home, crossword puzzles and sending cards to people. She delighted in spending time with her family.

Her family includes a step son, Arthur “Butch” (& Lorita) Schultz of Ninnekah, Oklahoma; two step grandchildren; seven step great grandchildren; 18 step great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews including her local caregivers, Donna (& Darwin) Lynch, Dwayne (& Maxie) Shultz, and Dennis (& Mary) Shultz, all of Marshalltown.

In addition to her two husbands, Leona was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Bill Jubeck and Bob Jubeck; and two sisters, Mamie Shultz and Hilda Engle of Marshalltown.

Funeral services will be held Monday, August 17, 2015, at 1 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Michael Omundson officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Monday morning after 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 11:00 a.m. until service time at 1 p.m. on Monday.
Memorials may be made to Mahaska County Sherriff Posse.
