Gene was passionate about two things in his life. His first passion was for his God and his second passion was for the farm. Gene first farmed southeast of Cedar, near Wright, and later purchased his own farm southwest of Oskaloosa. He loved the farm and felt very strongly about being a good steward of the land.

In his early years he enjoyed competing in plowing matches. He also owned and operated a custom harvesting and field tiling business. His passion for the Lord was demonstrated by teaching Sunday school and the many different ways he supported missionaries and mission work all over the world. He truly enjoyed the mission work he was able to do on his mission trip to Bolivia. He was an active member of the Omega Church in Oskaloosa. He loved to travel both for mission work and for pleasure, two of his favorite trips were to the Holy Land and to Alaska.
