Des Moines Hosting First Ever Brain Aneurysm Awareness Run

DES MOINES, IA – For the first time ever, the city of Des Moines will host a Brain Aneurysm Foundation event with the First Annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness 5K Walk/Run.

The event will be held at Gray’s Lake in Des Moines on Sunday, Sept. 20.

“It’s a no brainer, we are so thrilled to partner up with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation and help increase understanding of this extremely serious condition,” says Event Organizer Lisa Fisher. “There are preventative measures and valuable information that people need to be aware of. And for us to be able to start this event in the state of Iowa is such a valuable opportunity. This can save lives.”

An estimated six million people in the United States have an unruptured brain aneurysm. A brain aneurysm is a weak spot on the wall of a brain artery. Over time, the blood flow within the artery pounds against the portion of the wall. This pressure can cause the aneurysm to rupture, which commonly requires advanced surgical treatment. Ruptured brain aneurysms can be fatal in about 40 percent of the cases.

The condition is close to Fisher’s heart as her mother suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm in 2012. Her mother underwent surgery and after several life altering weeks in the intensive care unit, she survived.

“My mother is an inspiration to all of us. We were so scared at the time and to watch her fight through it all, it’s still hard to think about those days,” Fisher says. “I think one of the biggest takeaways from that experience is that we had no idea what we were dealing with. We want to change that. We have an opportunity to inform people and make a difference.”

The proceeds from the event will go towards the Brain Aneurysm Foundation. The event will start at 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 20. Registration starts at 8 a.m. on the overlook terrace on the SW corner of Gray’s Lake. The registration fee for adults is $25 and $10 for children ages 12 and under. Register by Sept. 6 to receive a t-shirt.
