Rising star collects second career NASCAR XFINITY Series win and first in Iowa

NEWTON, Iowa (May 17, 2015) – Defending NASCAR XFINITY Series champion, Chase Elliott, looked poised Sunday to win his second career NASCAR race at Iowa Speedway and his first in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. But it was a gamble by Chris Buescher and his No. 60 Roush Fenway Racing team that prevented Elliott from returning to Casey’s General Stores Victory Lane.

Buescher gambled, took two tires and then took off on the final restart to win the NASCAR XFINITY Series 3M 250 at Iowa Speedway. The win was his first of 2015 and the fifth for Roush Fenway Racing at Iowa Speedway.

“That was awesome,” Buescher said.

The win in Iowa also gives Buescher the series points lead by eight points over Ty Dillon, who was having a strong run on Sunday, too, but had it ruined by a tire going down with 10 laps left in regulation.

Elliott, who led a race-high 114 laps and had been half a lap from winning the race in regulation when Jamie Dick brought out the final caution by hitting the wall with two laps to go, was forced to settle for second.

“That’s hard to swallow, but Chris did a great job so congrats to him,” said Elliott, who is third in the series points standings, 31 behind Buescher. “I felt like we did a good job all weekend, too. We were fast and one of the better cars all weekend, so that’s something to be proud of and we’re excited about that.”

But it was Buescher who won after leading 95 laps. He came down pit road and took two tires while Elliott and Ryan Reed stayed out, and then Buescher made a daring move to the bottom of the racetrack to pass both Elliott and Reed on the final restart.

Next up for the “Fastest Short Track on the Planet” is the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and USAC Silver Crown Series combination weekend June 19-20. Iowa Speedway and Knoxville Raceway have teamed up to offer an unprecedented ticket package for race fans. The combo ticket provides fans the opportunity to attend the USAC Silver Crown Series at Iowa Speedway June 20 followed by the Lucas Oil Championship Cup Series at Knoxville Raceway later that night for one low price.
