Barnstormers Defeat Wolves, 20-17

Des Moines, IA – In the final moments of the game, the Iowa Barnstormers (3-6) defeated the Billings Wolves (1-8) Friday evening at MetraPark Arena in Billings, Montana.

The Iowa Barnstormers started out their evening with a rough start, losing the team’s first possession on a fumbled kick return. Going back and forth as each team found their groove, the Wolves were the first to find the end zone with a long 42-yard touchdown reception by receiver Austin Coleman. Iowa receiver Johnny Thomas snagged a quick one in the air from quarterback Taylor Genuser to bring the Barnstormers in to the game. At the end of the first, Billings Wolves 7, Iowa Barnstormers 6.

An instrumental quarter for the Wolves, the second brought ten points for the home team to increase the scoreboard margin to eleven points. A touchdown by receiver Travis Browne and field goal boot by Thom Chameraud gave Billings a good first-half lead. Billings Wolves 17, Iowa Barnstormers 6.

Coming out of the locker room, the Barnstormers hit the field with intentions to control the remainder of the game. At strong safety, Austin Benson tallied a rouge point followed by a 45-yard fumble return for a touchdown. What had seemed like a safe point margin for the Wolves was quickly slipping away. In the final quarter of the game, the Barnstormers would seal their fate as the clock wound down. Continuously making their way down the field, the Wolves struggled to find the end zone. Iowa’s defense held strong, now allowing for any points to be scored against them in the entire second half. Still down by three, the Barnstormers would need a field goal to tie the scoreboard or a touchdown to take the victory. Marking his second touchdown of the night, Genuser once again found Thomas in the end zone to bring the Barnstormers a road victory.

For the Barnstormers, Genuser completed 14 of 27 passing attempts for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Leading the receiving team, Thomas gained four attempts for 44 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, Benson collected seventeen total assists, including two tackles for loss.

Next weekend, the Iowa Barnstormers return to Des Moines to host the in-state rival, Cedar Rapids Titans. Kickoff is set for 7:05 p.m. CDT at Wells Fargo Arena.
