Virginia passed away Saturday morning a Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa at the age of 91 years, 11 months and 4 days.
Virginia Augusta Veldhuizen, daughter of Ira Stewart and Ruby Miller Hogate, was born December 16, 1918 in Tracy, Iowa. She attended school in Tracy and was a 1937 graduate of Tracy High School. During her high school career she was a four year starter as guard on the Tracy girl’s basketball team. In 1937, the team played for the Iowa Girls High School State Basketball Championship. She married Albert Henry “Hap” Veldhuizen October 12, 1937 in Lancaster, MO. In 1941, they moved to Long Island, Kansas and started farming. They remained there until 1953, when the need to be near family brought them back to Iowa. The first six years they were back, they lived on a farm north of Bussey and in 1959 they moved to a farm southwest of Oskaloosa. An opportunity to purchase a farm south of Eddyville came in 1964, so once again Virginia and Hap packed up and moved down the road. In 1989 Virginia and Hap moved to the new home they built in Oskaloosa. She and Hap enjoyed camping at the Iowa State Fair each year as well as camping at Lake Red Rock. They made several trips to see their son Galen at the many locations he was stationed with the military. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church. As the mother of eleven children, her family was her primary focus. Virginia had been a resident of Crystal Heights Care Center since March of 2009.
