Oskaloosa–In need of a dominating performance to jump start the season, the Statesmen softball team got two Sunday against Viterbo in a Midwest Collegiate Conference doubleheader.

William Penn (7-14, 3-1 MCC) won by scores of 8-0 and 10-2; both games ended in five innings via the mercy rule.

Lunden Young (Sr., Lewiston, Idaho, Exercise Science) tossed a one-hit shutout in the opener and was gifted with a plethora of run support as WPU outhit the V-Hawks 11-1. Young (4-7) struck out a career-high 11 batters versus one walk. The lone Viterbo (3-19, 1-7 MCC) hit came in the fifth.

Two runs were plated in both the first and second innings and then another came across in the fourth. The home team finally closed it out with a three-spot in the fifth, capped off by a single by Taylor Vernon (Fr., Tracy, Calif., Biology) for her second-straight game with the winning base knock.

Five Statesmen–Steele, Grove, Herron, Sydney Edwards (Sr., Galesburg, Ill., Psychology & Biology), and Chyanne Koko (Fr., Waianae, Hawaii, Business Management)–all went 2-for-3. Herron matched Braniff with a pair of RBIs, while Steele, Grove, and Edwards all rounded the bases on two occasions.
