The Mahaska County YMCA sent there Dolphin Swim team to state and they proved that hard work equals great results. The meet started with a Parade of Athletes with the theme being neon lights and the kids had a lot of fun participating in this. When the first event was called the team was ready and came away with a lot of personal best times during the 2 days of competition and some very exciting races that had the stands holding their breath until the times were posted. Some of the relays and individual events the swimmers were still taking off 3-8 seconds off of their best times which were huge in helping them place higher than expected. The Dolphins came away from the state meet earning 13 medals which were given out for the first, second and third place finishes. On Monday, following the State Swim Meet, the swim team had their “Last Splash” awards banquet and celebrated the great season that the swimmers had and talked about their accomplishments. Out of the 75 swimmers most of them are done for the year but for the 16 that qualified for Regionals there is one more big event left that will take place the end of March at the University of Minnesota as they go out to compete against the best from multiple states around Iowa. If you have any young swimmers that would like to try competitive swimming ask the returning swimmers, coaches, or parents about the fun that this team has working together as next season will be here before you know it.
