Norma Simons
Leighton. Norma Simons, 90, of Pella and formerly of Leighton, died Wednesday, September 8, 2010, at Jefferson Place in Pella. She was born on October 24, 1919, in the Richland Township of Mahaska County, the daughter of Engle and Marie DeReus Van Steenis. She was baptized on July 4, 1920, by Reverend J. Wesselink, she made her confession of faith on June 19, 1939, at the First Reformed Church in Pella. She grew up and attended school near Harvey. During WWII she worked at the ammunition plant in Des Moines making bullets. On September 5, 1944, she was united in marriage to Leonard J. Simons at the First Reformed Church in Pella. The family lived on a farm south of Leighton for 10 years before moving into Leighton. Norma stayed home to care for her family. In 1954, she and Leonard started Leighton Stockyard, Norma was active in the family business for many many years. In 2007, Norma moved from Leighton to Jefferson Place in Pella. She was a member of the Leighton Christian Reformed Church. She enjoyed camping with Leonard.
She is survived by her two children, Norene (& William) Bruxvoort of Leighton and Leroy (& Linda) Simons of Pella; four grandchildren: Karen (& Vince) Turk, Jim (& Crystal) Bruxvoort, Rob (& Alicia) Bruxvoort, and David Simons; two step grandchildren: Michael (& Chelsea) Richards and Mark (& Sarah) Richards; 13 great grandchildren: Kelsey, Alex, Zoey, Aliyah, Fasil, and Xavion Huizinga, Liesl and Mariel Bruxvoort, Lukas, Lizzy, Hannah, Joshua, and Maggy Bruxvoort; 5 step grandchildren: Matthew and Michaela Turk, Jayden and Clayton Richards, and Parker Richards; she will also be missed by her very close family friends: Deb, Dustin and Larry DeWitt all of Oskaloosa.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death her parents; and two brothers: Merle and Raymond Van Steenis.
Funeral services for Norma Simons will be held Saturday, September 11, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. in the Leighton Christian Reformed Church in Leighton with Reverend Don Ringnalda officiating. There will be a 10:15 a.m. family prayer service in the basement of the Church on Saturday. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery near Leighton. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Friday morning after 10 a.m. and the family will be at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Friday evening from 5:30 – 7:30 to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to Jefferson Place, Long Term Care in Pella.
