Beacon. Wilbur LeRoy “Roy” McCartney, 83, of Beacon died Friday, August 13, 2010, surrounded by his loving family in Oskaloosa. He was born on Tuesday, September 21, 1926, in New Sharon, Iowa, the son of Willard Norman and Esther Fay Ruby McCartney. He graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1945. Following school he stayed on the family farm and helped farm for a time. On December 13, 1948, he was united in marriage to Donna Jean Russell at Oskaloosa, she died April 5, 2009. Roy and Donna stayed on the farm until moving to Pella in 1950. Roy worked at Schuring Garage in Pella where he became a very skilled mechanic. In 1958 they moved to an acreage in Beacon. On the acreage in Beacon he opened Roy’s Garage, he owned and operated that business for a time. He also served as the Marshall of Beacon. He then went to work at Kaiser Construction where he worked in several capacities including: heavy equipment operator, superintendent, and mechanic, he truly enjoyed the mechanic work. He retired from Kaisers in the early 1980’s. He and Donna owned and operated several restaurants in Oskaloosa including: Chief Mahaska, Howdy Folks, and Donna’s Corner Café, he helped in every capacity at the restaurants. They sold the restaurant in 1996, and enjoyed retirement by driving all over the United States together. They visited 47 of the 50 states, Roy loved to drive. He also enjoyed working with Donna in establishing the O.K. (Older Kids) Bunch at the First Assembly of God Church where he attended for several years. He also enjoyed going to gun shows and tinkering in his garage. He was a member of the NRA.

His family includes 3 daughters: Nancy McCartney of Pella, Marlene (& David) Bunnell of Oskaloosa, Debra McCartney (& Reggie Schmit) of Grand Island, Nebraska; 2 sons: Michael McCartney of Oskaloosa, Jeffrey McCartney (& Lori Beason) of Beacon; 6 grandchildren: Michael, Athena, Konstandina Ladeas, Mike Jr., Adam McCartney, and Elliot Schmit; two great grandchildren; a sister: Erma Lust of New Sharon; and a nephew: Jon Hanna of Beacon.

He was preceded in death by his wife Donna; his parents; a daughter: Janice E. McCartney and a grandson: Brian K. Roberts; and a sister: Betty Hanna.

Funeral services for Roy McCartney will be held Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with the Reverend Michael Dotson officiating. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin Monday after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Monday from 6-8 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.
