Bernice Boston

Oskaloosa. Bernice K. Boston, 95, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, September 25, 2010, at the Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa. She was born on March 8, 1915, at Oskaloosa the daughter of Edwin G. and Grace Nash Bartlett. She graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1933. Bernice furthered her education at William Penn College and Northwestern. Following college she worked for the Farm Security Administer of the Department of Agriculture in Iowa as an administrative assistant. Bernice also worked for Johnson and Johnson Surgical Dressings in Chicago as a secretary. On January 4, 1947, she was united in marriage to Leroy Boston in Oskaloosa; Leroy died on July 9, 2001. Following their marriage they lived for a time in Des Moines. In 1949, they moved back to Oskaloosa and owned and operated Boston Coffee House. Bernice later worked for Iowa Power and Light for a time. Lastly she and Lee owned and operated Stewart’s Shoe Store in Oskaloosa; they retired from there in 1978. She enjoyed playing Bridge with her two Bridge Clubs. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa and was active in Christian Women’s Fellowship, and “In His Name” circle of King’s Daughters. She was also a member of the Altrusa Club, C.Y. Chapter of T.T.T., Oskaloosa Women’s Club, Mahaska Hospice and Hospital Auxiliaries, and the Mahaska County Historical Society.

She is survived by two nieces: Mary (& Pete) Van Ooyen and Marcella (& Bill) Covey all of Oskaloosa; a nephew: Frank Brower of St. Ansgar, Iowa; and a cousin: Charles Pomeroy in California.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother: Harry Bartlett, a sister: Erma M. Smith, and a nephew: John Brower.

Funeral services for Bernice Boston will be held Tuesday, September 28, 2010, at 11 a.m. in the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Monday after 11 a.m. and the family will be at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Monday evening from 5 –7 to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Mahaska Hospice Serenity House or the First Christian Church Building Fund.
