WPU Competes at Augsburg Tourney

Minneapolis, Minn.–The Statesmen wrestling team found the going pretty tough at the Auggie-Adidas Open hosted by Augsburg Saturday.

In a heavily-attended tournament that featured three divisions–Gold, Silver, Copper–William Penn had winners in each section.

Gold

Ishmael Rempson (Sr., Olympia Fields, Ill., Industrial Technology) was WPU’s top grappler on Saturday. After losing his first match at 165 pounds, he reeled off three straight (one by major decision) to claim the consolation title.

Charlton Benjamin (Sr., Atlanta, Ga., Sociology) was the consolation runner-up at 157 pounds with a 2-2 record, while 197-pounder Kyle Soderblom (Sr., Newton, Iowa, Biology) managed one fall for his day.

Silver

Two Statesmen wrestlers placed at 125 pounds as Bryce Castagna (Fr., Willcox, Ariz., Communications) was fourth at 2-2, while Angel Villa (Fr., Deming, N.M., General Accounting) was sixth–also 2-2.

149-pounder Lane Colwell (Jr., Knoxville, Iowa, Computer Science) and 197-pounder Skip Conner (So., Madison Heights, Mich., Sociology & Human Services) each finished 3-1 with one fall to place. Colwell was third, while Conner earned fifth place.

Marshawn Lacy (Sr., Chicago Heights, Ill., Computer Science), at 149 pounds, and Ryley Howell (Wapello, Iowa, Industrial Technology), at heavyweight, both had their hands raised once on Saturday as well.

Copper

Justin Van Est (Jr., Fruitland, Iowa, Sociology) guided the Copper group with a win at 149 pounds.

Next Up: William Penn takes a week off before returning to action in Oskaloosa for its home opener on Wednesday, December 3 against Truman (Mo.) at 7 p.m.
