Statesmen Dump Waldorf 25-19 in Season-Opening Dual
Forest City–The William Penn wrestling team took advantage of two forfeits to slide past Waldorf 25-19 in dual-meet action Wednesday.
Both sides were running a bit thin as the 13th-ranked Statesmen (1-0) were without starting 133-pounder Scottie Bonds (So., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education) and 165-pounder Jay Fresh (Jr., Knoxville, Iowa, Sociology).
The mish-mash lineup allowed the Warriors (0-1) to pick up some extra points and force the dual into the final few matches to determine a winner.
The visitors dropped the first two face-offs before Brad Watson (Jr., Rolla, Mo., Physical Education) got them on the board with a 15-4 major decision at 141 pounds.
Lane Colwell (Jr., Knoxville, Iowa, Computer Science) then collected a forfeit win at 149 pounds to put WPU up 10-7.
The next three weights went via decision with 165-pounder Ishmael Rempson (Sr., Olympia Fields, Ill., Industrial Technology) victorious by a score of 10-3.
With just three matches remaining, the score was tied at 13-13, but Kyle Soderblom (Sr., Newton, Iowa, Biology) gave the Statesmen the lead for good with a fall in a time of 5:52 at 184 pounds.
Skip Conner (So., Madison Heights, Mich., Sociology & Human Services) then locked up the win by receiving the other forfeit at 197.
Next Up: William Penn travels to Decorah Saturday to compete in the Luther Open. Action begins at 9 a.m.
