Unfortunately winter weather will soon be upon us and we will be driving on snow and ice covered roads. The leading cause of death during winter storms is vehicle accidents. Preparing yourself and your vehicle for the winter season are the keys to safe winter driving. Here are some winter driving tips:

– Watch weather and road reports (511).
– Make sure your vehicle is in top operating condition.
– Make sure your tires are properly inflated and have good tread.
– Keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid gas line freeze-up.
– Drive slowly. The normal dry following distance of 3 to 4 seconds should be increased to 8 to 10 seconds.
– Avoid driving while you are fatigued.
– Do no use cruise control when driving on slippery surfaces.
– Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Applying gas slowly to accelerate is the best method for gaining traction and avoiding skids.
– Always look and steer where you want to go.
– Have your charged cell phone with you along with a blanket, gloves, hat, food, water, medication and shovel.
– If you become stuck, stay with your vehicle. It provides temporary shelter and easier for rescuers to find you.
– Tie a brightly covered cloth to the antenna or place a cloth at the top of a rolled up window to signal distress. At night, keep your dome light on if possible. It only uses a small amount of electricity and makes it easier for rescuers to find you.
– Make sure your exhaust pipe is not plugged.
– If possible, run the engine and heater just long enough to remove the chill and conserve gasoline.
– Don’t over exert yourself trying to push or dig yourself out.
– Use your seatbelt every time you drive.
– Use common sense.
– STAY HOME – If you really don’t need to go out, DON”T.
