Oskaloosa, Iowa – The future of a dog park in Oskaloosa has been a point of conversation from time-to-time in the community for the past couple of years. With an extra session of the Planning & Zoning Commission needed, the proposal made its way to the City Council agenda.

At the Oskaloosa City Council meeting on Monday, the possibility of just such a park became a few paws closer to becoming a reality by the approval of a site plan. The park will be located south of the current pool. There will be two areas to the park, one for larger dogs, and another for smaller dogs. Both will feature 4 foot fencing.

The site plan came with a waiver to provide water fountains and restrooms, and also a waiver for the ADA requirements until July 1, 2015. This measure was in place to help the committee, responsible for advocating the new park, to utilize a $15,000 grant.

The City also agreed to provide the labor to relocate the main park entrance chain and gate along South F.  With this are some requirements of the committee.

  • Provide five directional signs (4 entrances and one interior) to the dog park.
  • Provide two directional signs to the restrooms from the dog park.
  • Provide two benches for each section of the park, for a total of 4 benches throughout the park.
  • Provide two dog waste stations for each section of the park, for a total of 4 waste stations.
  • Provide ADA Accessibility to the Dog Park with ADA signage.
